Red Sea 2010

This liveaboard diving holiday was run with members of Saddleworth Sub-Aqua Club. We were to sail aboard the Blue Pearl liveaboard for a 6-day itinerary sailing from Port Ghalib near Marsa Alam to the St. Johns reef system. Other dive sites were visited en-route to St. Johns and back.

Day 1 - Leaving port, Check-Out Dive & Twilight Dive

Leaving Port Ghalib late morning we made two dives during the day - a quick check-out dive just out from the port at Umm Rus before sailing south for a twilight dive at Shaab Marsa Alam. The Blue Pearl then sailed overnight to St. Johns Reef.

Day 2 - St. Johns Reef (1st day)

A four dive day, all in St. Johns - Habili Ali, Gota Big, Umm Arouk and a night dive at Abu Basala - Big walls; Healthy hard corals; Atmospheric lighting and the Mysterious ‘forest’ of coral trees - an excellent day!

Day 3 - St. Johns Reef (2nd day) & Mikauwa (Bird) Island

An early 05:30 start for our first dive at Habili Ghafer and there were still too many divers! Second dive at the renowned Cave Reef at St. Johns - excellent atmospheric swimthroughs. Sailed north to Mikauwa Island off Ras Banas for one excellent and one so-so night dive!

Day 4 - Fury Shoal & Wadi Gimal

Another early start for probably the best dive of the day at Shaab Maksour in the Fury Shoals. We then sailed past the other popular Fury Shoal sites to reach Wadi Gimal for some afternoon diving - a long day rounded off by an overnight sailing to the Elphinstone!

Day 5 - The Elphinstone

Two dives at the infamous Elphinstone, but unfortunately no shark sightings! Still great walls, plenty of colour (when the sun was up!) and plenty of divers! A third dive was made at Abu Dabab before we made our overnight mooring at Marsa Shouna.

Day 6 - The Final Day

Two dives at our final overnight mooring at Marsa Shouna, just North of Marsa Alam. Marsa Shouna is a sheltered sandy bay, which is apparently home to feeding sea turtles and Dugongs - not that we saw any of course! Sailed back to Port Ghalib, tired but happy!
