Cuba - March 2006

This two week holiday commenced with a couple of days seeing the sights of old Havana. The old city has been preserved as best as the limited resources of Cuba can manage and a few days spent here is well worthwhile. We then hired a car and drove down to Trinidad, before heading back up the coast to the Bay of Pigs and then northwards to Vinales and ultimately Maria de la Gorda for some diving.

Havana

Flying in from Paris, we spent our first few days in old Havana to see some of the sights and to experience the atmosphere and sample a Mojito or two!

Trinidad

The small town of Trinidad lies about half-way along on the Caribbean Sea coast of Cuba. A UNESCO World heritage site since 1988, many of the old buildings typify Spanish Colonial architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Bay of Pigs

Scene of the 1963 failed US invasion, the Bay of Pigs is now the home of the Giron Museum, dedicated to the conflict, and also a holiday camp which uses the original military base.

Pinar del Rio and Vinales

Vinales is a small town and lies in the Pinar del Rio province in the North West of Cuba. The Vinales valley is an area famed for its mogotes - limestone outcrops.

Diving at Maria de la Gorda

Lying at the very North Western tip of Cuba, Maria de la Gorda is home to a medium sized resort which has access to some quality diving on the Caribbean reefs.
