Myanmar - January 2011

Myanmar, more commonly known as Burma, is a mysterious country which, due to it’s political constitution, has remained ‘off-limits’ to most tourists for many years. This special ‘birthday’ trip, was to take Graham and Peter to dive in the Mergui Archipelago, which lies just off the western seaboard of Myanmar in the Andaman Sea. The archipelago was only opened to tourism in 1996, and is still rarely visited.

Entering Myanmar

After an exiting 5 hour mini-bus dash through Thailand to get to the border control at Rawthuang before it closed for the day, we were then transferred to boat to complete our journey. Here are a few photos to give a flavour of this leg.

The Myanmar Andaman Resort

One of over eight hundred islands in the Mergui Archipelago, Macleod Island is one of the southernmost. Uninhabited, except by the resort, MacLeod Island is densely forested and serene. This section has a few photos of the island and the resort.

Local Diving from Macleod Island - Part 1

Diving was organised through a small, adjacent, dive centre run by Extra Divers a worldwide German company. The standard diving day consisted of a 9am briefing, followed by 2 local boat dives, returning for lunch at about 1pm.

A Special Day Trip to Dive Western Rocky Island

Western Rocky Island is one of the more renowned dive sites in the Andaman Sea. Normally only dived by liveaboard from Thailand, Western Rocky is just within dayboat range of Macleod Island - it’s about a 2½ hour sail!
